San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury during his team's 35-10 Sunday Night Football loss to the Buffalo Bills and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters during his postgame press conference.
"I think potentially [it's season-ending]," Shanahan said via ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "I think PCL is usually a couple weeks, but I'm not exactly sure yet."
McCaffrey, 28, is scheduled to undergo further testing on Monday (December 1) before his status is officially determined. The former Stanford University standout had already missed the Niners' first seven games after initially being expected to play despite a calf injury that kept him out for most of training camp, however, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Good Morning Football Wednesday that McCaffrey was also dealing with Achilles tendonitis, which was the bigger concern.
McCaffrey recorded 53 yards on seven rushing attempts, as well as two receptions for 14 yards during Sunday's (December 1) loss to the Bills before being taken to the blue injury tent and locker room for evaluations and officially being ruled out by Shanahan at halftime. The 28-year-old recorded 202 yards on 50 rushing attempts and 15 receptions for 146 yards in four games during the 2024 NFL season.
McCaffrey was coming off a career season in which he recorded an NFL-best 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns on 272 rushing attempts, as well as 57 receptions for 565 yards and seven touchdowns, winning the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2023.
