Actress Diane Ladd's Cause Of Death Revealed

Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Ladd died from acute chronic hypoxic respiratory failure, according to a death certificate obtained by PEOPLE on Monday (November 17).

Respiratory failure is a condition that occurs when there isn't enough oxygen or too much carbon dioxide in the body, most commonly in the lungs, and can either happen all at once (acute) or during a long period of time (chronic), according to the Cleveland Clinic. Ladd was reported to have suffered from interstitial lung disease for years prior to her death, with esophageal dysmotility listed as a significant factor on the death certificate.

The Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore actress was reportedly cremated on November 10, her death certificate states. Actress Laura Dern, who Ladd shared with ex-husband Bruce Dern, confirmed her mother's passing in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter shared on November 3.

"My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Ca," Dern wrote. "She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created. We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now."

Ladd's acting career spanned more than 70 years and included roles in more than 200 films and television shows, receiving three Academy Award nominations for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose. The Mississippi native also appeared in the films Chinatown, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Ghosts of Mississippi, Primary Colors, 28 Days and Joy.
