James Van Der Beek, best known for his role in Dawson's Creek, has died following his battle with cancer. He was 48.

The actor's family confirmed in a statement on the actor's Instagram that he had passed away "peacefully" Wednesday (February 11) morning and asked for privacy as they mourned the loss of the beloved husband and father of six.

"Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning," they wrote, sharing a photo of the late actor. "He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."

The Varsity Blues star's death comes after a years-long cancer battle. He was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023 and shared his diagnosis with People in November 2024. He made his final public appearance on December 19, 2025, on Today where he revealed that he was feeling "much, much better" than a few months prior.

"It's been a longer journey than I ever thought it would be. It's required more of me — more patience, more discipline, more strength than I knew I had," he said. "I knew I was strong — I didn't know I was this strong. But I feel good."

Van Der Beek is survived by his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek, their six children Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah.
