The writers of one beloved One Direction song are explaining how Adele just barely missed out on getting the track.

A Whole Lotta History, which hit shelves on November 3), was written by Jason Lipshutz and details how the group — Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne — found international success and help bring about "the sound the shaped a generation," per People.

In the book, he spoke with songwriters Jamie Scott and Mozella, who co-wrote eight songs on 1D's 2014 album Four, including the song "Fool's Gold."

"We thought it was special — just this real, honest, raw song," said Mozella.

Scott went on to share the song with Styles, who loved it, but he later received a call from the "Hello" singer expressing her own interest in the song.

"I remember getting a call from Adele, saying, 'I just heard this song that you wrote for One Direction!" Scott recalled.

Unfortunately for Adele, the song was already spoken for by the boyband by that time.

"Basically, [Adele] heard it and was like, 'I love this!'" Mozella said. "But he had already promised it to the boys, so we couldn't take it back."

Earlier this year, Horan called "Fool's Gold" one of the most "underrated" songs in the group's discography along with another track that was "robbed of its day in the sun." Tomlinson has also shared his own hot takes on the One Direction song he loved the most and the one that was "always, always, always" his least favorite song to perform.
